Will this be the year that Callen (Chris O’Donnell) finally learns the truth about his family on NCIS: Los Angeles? And if so, what price will he have to pay?

Season 7 kicks off with a small time jump, picking up three months after the end of Season 6, when viewers learned that Callen’s presumed-dead father is actually alive. And it’s only a matter of time before Callen makes the same discovery. “The very heart of what this show is is Callen’s search for his family,” executive producer Shane Brennan tells TVGuide.com. “We are stepping closer and closer to finally giving Callen closure.”

What will happen to Callen when he finds out everything about his family, his past, his name? He is defined by his past and driven to find out about his family. Will he lose his drive, will it make his less sharp…eventually leading to a life threatening scenario for him or his team? Or will Callen become a little more normal and settled in himself, allowing him to move forward in her personal life and maybe even have a true relationship leading to his own family.

Or is Shane Brennan preparing for us for the end of NCISLA (maybe not season 7, but season 8 or 9)? I know I’ve read somewhere that he’s said NCISLA is, at the heart, the story of Callen’s journey and he’ll find out his first name in the last episode…

I guess you think too far ahead. SB “We are stepping closer and closer to finally giving Callen closure.” That doesen’t mean that he will find out everything in this season (at least I hope not). I don’t think he will get all the answers he is searching for because you are right, SB said we and Callen will get his name in the very last episode. So hopefully these are just some more of the overrated teasers.
But your thoughts about how Callen will change after he gets the answers he is looking for are interesting. I hope he just find more clues nothing more. And I for sure don’t wnat him to lead a “normal” life like Sam. The mystery about him will be gone and so my interest.
The tension that will arise from his actions is what I am looking for.

Oh, those could’ve been my words, Skippy. I actually don’t really want to know the family details, the family man Callen could be, to be revealed. Like you say, the mystery about him should stay…
Clues are okay, but not all the answers!

One more thing worth taking into consideration: this wouldn’t be the first time, the showrunner announces something in an interview, and we never see it on screen. I think a little skepticism is in order regarding these interviews.

      1. I Feel Possessed

Totally agree Mogorva, if any one is going to a cast Q & A, I would really like to know who Callen’s new love was is S6 – Kensi undercover?

I just can’t resist the temptation to read these, watch the promos and then the sneak peeks (no will power)!

I want that family soap opera out of the way. I love this show, but now that is just boring as hell and annoying, so end it, and let the show continue with some interesting stories. I don’t care if it’s Callen based, until it’s not that family thing.

haha, such an opposing view to mine. That’s what I think the Kensi/Deeks relationship seriously runs the risk of doing. However personally, as there are really only a few episodes each season that really focus on family or love, (specifically Callen or Densi), I still think the writers have the right balance. It depends what they do with Deeks’ mum though. I also want more Hetty storylines.

I actually think that is where NCIS (mothership) has gone – too soapy. They’ve introduced all the main character’s family members for no reason at all, with the exception of Gibbs and his daughter.

Callen’s family doesn’t need to appear on the show as Callen & us can learn about his family without the happening.

I still stand firm on my belief that Callen can move forward with his life AND still search for the answers he wants. He doesn’t really need them, he had just convinced himself that he does. I feel he (and the writer’s) underestimate what he has to offer a woman in a relationship. And that he would an awesome father based on who he IS, what he HAS achieved in his life and what he has become despite not knowing his first name and the details of his life he was too young to remember.
And if the “where/who is Callen’s father doesn’t end soon … that is so freaking annoying. Definitely soap opera like.

I just don’t care about Callens story. Never have. Don’t get me wrong, I like Callen but this has gone on too long.

Shane Brennan is wrong, the heart of this show is the chemistry between the characters. That is why I watch.

How could SB the creator of this NCIS TV show be wrong? It is up to him since this is his baby and he said from the very first beginning that this is the story about Callen, his mystery and the search for answers about his past and his family.
I would understand your concerns if there would be 20eps in each season Callen searching for answers. But for example in S5 there was one and in S6 two where this topic was an issue (but not even the main topic of these eps).
IMO SB knows how to keep the balance between the actual crime cases and Callens story and other characters story. For me there could be more Callen of course but I am pretty sure the teasers for S7 are misleading again. I guess the majority of the eps will be case related eps plus the Deeks focused eps.
I believe the balance to keep it interesting for all of us will continue.

      1. Deeks Fan

You’re right. SB believes that Callens past is the heart of the show.
However, that storyline is old and boring, for me. I don’t watch because of it. In fact , I am less likely to watch if it takes up too much of the show.
Hopefully, we will all get some of what we love this season.

I love Callen and he is my favorite character, but even I agree its time to move past the search for family part of the story. I think it would be more interesting at this point to see how Callen reacts and adjusts his life after finding the answers he has been looking for.

  5. Claire

There’s a huge difference between ‘learning that his father is alive’ and ‘stepping closer to finally giving him closure’. I hope that Callen won’t find out everything about his family. Clues are fine but nothing more. Callen is the main (maybe only) reason I’m watching the show and the mysterey, the unknown past is what drives him forward. Without it, he would be more ordinary.
