All teenagers in the US do it. In fact, if you see a teenager anywhere who isn’t doing it, you might want to snap a quick picture, because it’s infecting them all at an alarming rate.
You guessed it: staring at their cell phones as if it is telling them the secrets to the Universe.
Guess who else does it occasionally?
G Callen.
So it begs the question that many a good fan are wondering: what is he looking at???
Is he texting? Some ask.
Studying cases. Some say.
Reading the news!
Watching stocks?
Finishing that Russian book on a phone reader.
Browsing the World Wide Web.
Good grief, the list is endless! Really there is no telling what is so interesting on his phone. All we truly know is that he has to go into multitasking mode whenever he does it, half listening to his peers, half using his cell phone. (He gets that look on his face that simply falls under “multitasking.” Like the times he’s trying to figure out flashbacks while listening to a person talk… I always thought it was rude of that person for not halting their blabbing so he could finish his flashback in peace. Alas, another rant for another post.)
Here’s the GOOD news.
We can pretty well guess what ISN’T on that cell phone screen.
- He is NOT checking Facebook. Callen doesn’t do The FB. (And he thinks we’re idiots for doing it.)
- He’s not watching YouTube. If he needs to know about something on YouTube, he’s certain Eric and Nell will tell him about it. (Of course he knows that Hetty occasionally browses YouTube. It was his first sign that she was human and not some super spy soldier woman hatched in a lab.)
- He’s not planning dinner. It’s L.A.; lots of places to eat out.
- He’s not checking on the video cameras that guard Ops.
- He isn’t logging a tally of who wins arguments on his Team. (He wins all of them, anyway.)
- He is NOT doing any sort of mathematics.
- He’s not Googling Lady Gaga. Again, if he needs to know, someone will tell him. (No one keeps up with The Gaga like Hetty.)
- He’s not finding e-mails that stump him, since nothing stumps him. Ever. EVER.
- He is definitely NOT trying to find a way to take over the world. (Even though he could, and all of us think he should.)

He’s checking his twitter TL. Really. It’s the last thing anyone would expect G. Callen to do, and that is exactly why hardly anyone would believe it. But I do.
He tweets. Uses an alias, of course. And I’m not the one to tell which alias it is, he’d unfriend me immediately. I think.
Sounds pretty odd, doesn’t it?
Well, at least now you know!
Maybe G Callen has a secret lover or family no one in the team knows about. Well maybe Sam does, he is his best friend after all, and he did know Sam’s wife and daughter, when the rest of the team were in shock. He’s in contact with his wife and/or kids, seeing he’s at work so much. Just a thought!
Thank you very much for this article, Keviana. To be honest, I never noticed that he is staring at his phone more than others. Well maybe this is because I am staring at him. I should re-watch all seasons. Right now.
But all jesting aside, I agree with Richtsje. I can tell you the alias, but then I’d have to kill you. And Hetty would be pissed. Because she knows everything, that is for sure.

Looking at the color on the screen on his phone I reckon he’s just looking up Callen’s corner on the NCIS:LA magazine site, just to see who’s talking about him. 🙂
I agree, he’s reading all the tweets we send him. Too bad he never answers.
He’s gossiping with Gibbs
I was in the “wilderness” the past couple of days and came in late to this one. But what a laugh I got out of seeing all the comments! You all crack me up!!!
What do I think he’s doing with his phone? Hmmmm. The practical side of me agrees that he’s just checking current events. Maybe even checking scores from games he and Sam happen to NOT have tickets to. And in the season 3 opener, when Hetty is perched beside him, so rudely staring at him when he wakes up from his bad dream, I thought maybe he was turning off an alarm he had set for he cat-nap.
But then there’s a side of me that sees his phone gazing as something much more mysterious. Maybe he’s checking on leads in the search for information about his family?
And the silly side of me… well… There are cameras secretly planted in all of our TV/computer screens, so the characters can see US watching THEM. (I told you it was my silly side.) And Callen is just thrown off by the way we all look like we slip off into some type of hypnotic state every time he appears on our screens – all dreamy-eyed, our mouths slightly opened, some of us just on the verge of drooling. Hey! Don’t look at me like I’m insane. You know what I’m talking about. Or else you wouldn’t be reading Callen’s Corner.
